Howdy,

Those of you that have followed this blog for a time may have seen a handful of articles written that reference the Yakima River and my good buddy, fellow guide, fly pattern co-developer and all around great guy Derek Young .  A non-fishing trip a few years back took me through that area and that started a chain of events chronicled here and here.

Two years, still Yak-less

Howdy,

A little over two years ago I wrote a blog article [ here ] about Lori & I’s trip to the Gorge Amphitheater to watch a Dave Matthews Band concert.  It wasn’t really a fishing related story, other than the mention that I wished to return to the Yakima River someday and fling a fly or two.  The trip was a birthday present from Lori (a really good one) and since Lori was pregnant at the time, it was timely. We’d soon have a new baby and the opportunity to hop in a car and drive 300+ miles to see a concert wouldn’t come around all that often for a while.

The year to come (2011)……

Howdy,

The fine folks over at OBN (Outdoor Blogger Network) have issued a writing prompt to us bloggers to make a list of resolutions for 2011.  Not being the type to make resolutions, this is somewhat of a challenge for me.  I understand the concept and all (make a list of things to accomplish during the year).  It’s just that I’ve never quite seen the point.  Maybe I’m just too cynical.

That said, I’m willing to throw my hat in the ring and do my part as a member of the OBN.  Here goes….

Caddis Time!

Western dry fly anglers can celebrate spring with the arrival of Caddis hatches.  Sure, there are BWO’s, March Browns, and a variety of stoneflies in the air, but the caddis hatch on some rivers is so prolific that all other bugs seem insignificant.  Such is the case here on the North Santiam.

Soon after a few consecutive warm days in April, the little speckled caddis begin to appear.  By little, I mean equivalent to a size 14-16 hook.  The shoreline is crawling with them.  Bump the bushes or wiggle a tree branch and a cloud of them scatter in all directions.  A standard Cuttwing Caddis or Double Wing EHC will serve you well.
